Today, I went to court. I was in the final grouping of potential jurors for what has the makings of being a long trial. So I rose early this morning, kissed my wife goodbye (long and passionately…as usual), finished filling out my questionnaire (with the whole truth and nothing but the truth), and headed off to the courthouse.
Upon arrival - but after going through metal detectors, riding four escalators, and going to the bathroom, I was greeted with the following words: “Good News! The jury was selected yesterday. You can go home.” I handed in my papers and left.
Travel Time: 1 hour 45 minutes
Sleep Deprivation: 2 hours
Transit Fares: $6.00
Banana Bread (to get change for transit on the way there): $2.00
Hot Chocolate (to get change for transit on the way back): $3.26
Psychological Stress of Possibly Being Selected: Immeasurable
Total lawsuit pending against the Toronto Court System for losses and emotional strain:
$6,000,011.26
It would have been cheaper to call my house.
